Dylan Moran - Yeah, Yeah! @ The Waterside Theatre, Aylesbury

As a huge fan of the outrageously funny award-winning sitcom Black Books, I was very excited to have the chance to see Dylan Moran’s stand-up act.  Last year he was voted the 14th greatest stand-up comic, but I think he should be in the top 3!  Certainly I’ve seen an array of stand-up comedians perform over the years who rely on a warm-up support act and only deliver a short routine themselves.  Not only that, but most seem unable to speak a sentence without using an expletive, showing a lack of intelligence, imagination and vocabulary.  Dylan Moran, I’m pleased to say, has to be one of the best comedians globally, with a wide vocabulary, sharp wit and extraordinary mind.  Plus, if you’ve paid to see Dylan Moran then that’s who you get – nearly 2 hours of his observational banter without a support act!  Brilliant!

The audience immediately warmed to the charming and affable Dylan, as he interacted with us and speculated how the Waterside Theatre came to be built, making some hysterically funny observations about people living in the commuter belt and the conversations we have at dinner parties.  His comedy is sharply observed, irreverent, silly and absurd, which makes you relax very quickly, sit back and laugh till your sides ache!  Dylan seamlessly moves from topic to topic from ageing, politics, religion, kids and relationships and intertwines them with the general absurdities of life.  He plants some bizarre imagery in your mind, such as a ‘hive of worms’ and throughout the show, the screen behind shows a selection of his surreal cartoon drawings and paintings.

Perrier Award winner Moran has had huge success as both a writer and performer. He received a BAFTA and a Bronze Rose of Montreux for his Channel 4 sitcom Black Books and has had a film career including the smash hits, Shaun of the Dead and Run Fat Boy Run.  I also enjoyed the film The Actors which he starred in opposite Michael Caine in 2003.

Moran’s stand-up shows have sold out across the world and his unkempt wordsmith’s reputation as one of the foremost comics of his generation has earned him the label of 'The Oscar Wilde of Comedy'.

We've seen very little of Dylan on our TV screens in the last few years, which is a great shame.  Catch this show to see a comic expert - stand-up will never be the same again!
