FAME THE MUSICAL (Kings Theatre, Glasgow, 19-24 January 2009)
FAME - The Musical
makes a welcome return to Glasgow’s King’s Theatre. Could it live up to its
moniker and “live forever”?
FAME concentrates on excelling in almost every ‘tried and tested’ aspect of modern musical theatre. Out go the old characters and the old soundtrack and in come fresh people and music with similar themes to the original movie but with a modern slant. Music and drama now blend perfectly in a style that suits the stage rather than celluloid. Of course the title song remains to ensure that the audience do not leave disappointed!
The 2009 touring production maintains the high standard of its forebears. Technically, the show is almost flawless with excellent use of lighting to create the mood on the impressive set. Direction is crisp and yet sympathetic when required and music is expertly directed although the volume of the band seemed to outstrip the cast on occasion. The choreography truly excels. “Lively”, “varied”, “original”, “acrobatic” – all of these phrases apply but fall short of explaining just how good it is.
All of these superlatives leave precious little room to talk about the performances. There was some great character work. Outstanding players for me were Holly James (Carmen Diaz), Jon-Sel Gourkan (Joe Vegas) and teacher-turned-X-Factor-diva, Beverly Trotman as Miss Shearman. The quality of dancing, singing and acting was first class throughout.
FAME has been doing
the rounds for 12 years now but can it continue to tour
indefinitely? With
a heady mix of comedy, drama, song and dance at its core and
talented young casts like this re-energising the show for each
tour – yes, FAME will live forever!!
