EDINBURGH FRINGE: Gyles Brandreth: Break a Leg! *****

If you see just one show in the Fringe it should be this one.

I know. Gyles Brandreth pops up all over the place - Radio 4’s Just a Minute, BBC1’s The One Show; countless radio programmes, books and plays; a former MP, he’s an actor, the Queen’s biographer, a raconteur… the list is endless.

He is also the biggest name dropper ever, and with good reason as he proves in his latest show, counting Britain’s greatest actors among his friends - and what a great storyteller he is. His mimicry (he does a very good Laurence Olivier), not to mention a song or two, could alone make a show.

But it’s his timing and quick fire wit - at times intelligent, topical, at others ever so slightly naughty, which makes me think he could now add stand-up comic to his CV.

His enthusiasm is infectious; his energy inspirational. And not only does he entertain, he also educates!

Gyles Brandreth: Break a Leg! At Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33) EH8 9TJ most days, at 4.30pm. Tickets £16-£19 with concessions. Box Office: 0131 556 6550.
