Gyles Brandreth had better watch out. For the broadcaster, writer and performer is in danger of being upstaged by his son.

Benet Brandreth is not only an accomplished actor, novelist, oh and QC, he is now a stand-up comedian. What right has one family to have so much talent in so many different ways, I ask myself?

I’ve been moved to tears a few times during this Fringe, but Brandreth Jnr’s show had me crying with laughter.

He is more studied than his father; I get the feeling every word is carefully chosen for maximum impact - which it certainly has. But the Brandreth passion, vigour and enthusiasm is there in spades. He is also a great communicator. He gets his audience eating out of his hand while making so many of them part of the entertainment.

It’s a rollercoaster of a show, part autobiographical, part pure nonsense, if the brainy Brandreths could ever be nonsensical. OK, so it’s intelligent nonsense. In fact, it is very cleverly done.

I was hanging on his every word. He’s certainly a hero for my times!

Benet Brandreth: A Hero for Our Times at the Sportsmans, Gilded Balloon Teviot, Bristo Square EH8 9AJ until August 27 at 11.15am until the 22nd, then 4.15pm.
