To some, the title may suggest an entertainment for voyeurs.

But 1-2-1 This Sex is Real is, in fact, an important piece of work which should be on the curriculum for schools and colleges. In a world where social media rules lives, writer and co-star Rob Leach succinctly examines how it can affect relationships.

Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and WhatsApp all have starring roles in one couple’s relationship as they are influenced by advertising and social media and strive to present the perfect image online. It should be compulsory viewing for the younger generation, but parents and grandparents too could learn a lot about the peer pressure youngsters have to cope with.

Leach and co-star Olivia Jewson are utterly convincing as a millennial couple whose lives are determined by notifications and Facebook status. They are brave too as they cavort in their underwear in an intimate space where a double bed takes centre stage.

Their ups and downs (in more ways than one!) make for emotional viewing. It’s heartbreaking when Lauren becomes almost hysterical because her friends are posting photographs she thinks look better than she does. But there are also lots of laugh out loud moments.

With tight direction from Marshall Griffin, this groundbreaking play is worthy of its sell out shows - especially as it is Leach’s debut as a writer. Given the subject matter and presentation, he deserves an award.

1-2-1 This Sex is Real is at C Royale, 22 George Street (Venue 6) until Aug 18 at 6.55pm. Tickets £8.50-£10.50 with concessions.
